I am a geek and a trekker, and did my Ph.D. in Solid state physics at Uppsala University in Sweden. After that I worked as a post-doctoral research assistant at the University of Warwick for three and a half years. For the next year and a half I did a second post-doc at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London, where I now work as a lecturer in electron microscopy. I am, and have always been, a compulsive reader of pretty much anything I can get my hands on. The Harry Potter series is fairly high on my list of favourite books, as well as The Lord of the Rings, all of Jane Austen's books, To Kill a Mocking-Bird, The Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy and the Discworld series. I also read popular science books for fun. (Told you I am a geek, didn't I?) As well as reading I like watching films/television and am currently working my way through Star Trek on DVD - I am on the seventh season of DS9 having gone through all of TNG and the first season of Voyager. I also really enjoy CSI, partly because they show scientists being cool but very much due to the great characters as well. It does upset me though when they get the science wrong, and I will tell them (as if they are listening) "that's not the way it works!" I have recently watched Firefly and Serenity, which was simply marvelous. The only bad thing about it is how little of it there is!

Life is not just books and television, though, and I have been rather heavily involved in the Engineering Students' Union at Uppsala Univeristy (UTK/UTN). These days I just write for the magazine, Techna, and take part in the editorial work, which is great fun. That is probably due to the fact that the "staff" of Techna (anybody who wants to is welcome to partake in the making of the magazine) are a great bunch of people.

I also have a project (life-long?) of seeing all of Shakespeare's plays performed on stage. So far I have seen The Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Love's Labour's Lost, Othello, A Winter's Tale, and Henry IV, part 1.

A while back I wrote (and submitted!) a piece of fan fiction for a challenge and the talented [info]lblikesbagels made me this banner for it.
